Iceland X Arc'teryx

A brand feature and photo essay by photographer Colin Rex, showcasing the Beta SV Jacket from Arc'teryx and shot in the otherworldly landscapes of Iceland.

Disentangled (verb): freed from what binds or holds back.

My latest project, shot amongst the otherworldly landscapes of Iceland, consists of a series of self portraits taken of me running around like a fool in my Beta SV Jacket from Arc'teryx. Part photo series and part product feature, the project seeks to document man's humble place within nature while showing off the jacket being worn as intended - for extended exposure to the most extreme conditions.

Recently, I experienced a move to a big city. After my initial excitement wore off, I feared I was headed down a slippery slope toward the thing I dreaded most: routine. A long summer full of adventure had given way to dreary weather and mundanity, and before long I had accepted my new role as yet another drone walking through the metro station at 8:30am looking down rather than around; one more person in a sea of people handicapped by blinders in the form of cell phones. All the promise the city offered meant nothing if I couldn’t detach for long enough to free my mind every once in awhile. How could a place that offered so much opportunity to some feel like a straightjacket to others? I needed to create.

I felt the urge to escape the monotony of everyday life and lose myself - if only for a couple of weeks - in the beauty and serenity of a truly wild place. The unforgivable Icelandic winter proved to be both the perfect set for my project and the perfect test for this bombproof GORE-TEX® Pro shell, which allowed me to stop focusing on the elements and start focusing on my next adventure. After all, the weather doesn't suck, your gear does!

The Beta SV is a highly versatile jacket for severe conditions. Made from hardwearing N80p-X 3L GORE-TEX® Pro, its durable waterproof, windproof, breathable protection withstands the realities of harsh mountain environments. The articulated regular fit with e3D moves with your body and comfortably accommodates layers, and pit zips speed ventilation. The helmet compatible StormHood™ delivers protection with minimal impact on peripheral vision and secures with glove-friendly Cohaesive™ cordlocks.
